Do you know what Kit Harrington (John Snow from Game of Thrones) and his screen friend John Bradley (Samuel Turley), Kristen Stewart (Bella Swann), rock star Gene Simmons from Kiss and Star Wars Director JJ Abrams have in common? They share the same make up artist – a young Bulgarian woman with Armenian roots – Karmen Haik Petrov, a Bachelor of Criminal Law.
Karmen currently works for CBS in New York City, mainly for the Entertainment Tonight show. She also does the make up for guests in the popular shows Dr Phil, Good morning, America, The View, The Talk and others.
Recently, she opened her own beauty studio.
Of course, success goes hand in hand with some gaffes. ‘One of the most embarrassing moments in my career is when I was doing Mary Stuart Masterson and Kristen Stewart’s makeup for the filming of the Tribeca Film Festival, said Karmen. ‘This was the first time I had worked with stars. Suddenly, as if in slow motion, I saw a huge drop of foundation fall from my hand and land on Mary Stuart Masterson’s dress. Imagine a big beige spot on her light blue dress, which she was to be filmed wearing at the festival in 15 minutes – it was dreadful!’. It’s important to keep your cool though. As Karmen shares, stars want to be treated as ordinary people.
Karmen has some advice for ladies who are preparing for a business meeting and those who need makeup for a glamorous evening event:
Most business ladies do not wear artificial eyelashes and generally want their makeup to be very natural. At business meetings makeup should not be noticed, it only gives a finish and freshness to the face.
Evening business makeup can be a little bit stronger, for example put on a bit more eye colour or apply a brighter lipstick. When it comes to red carpet photos, it’s a different story – there makeup is a very important accessory. It is much heavier, as it is meant to work for the camera. The three things to pay attention to are:
- how you are dressed
- your hairdo and of course
- your makeup
